DOGWOOD SPORTING DOG RESCUE is a network of dedicated people who are passionate about animal welfare. We are a social benefit, “specific breed” rescue network that primarily rescues dogs classified as  “sporting” or “gun” dogs.

Our Mission is simple: Our goal is to re-home homeless, unwanted or abused animals We ensure that they are neutered/spayed and evaluated to give them and their new families the greatest possibility of success. Our dogs make their way into loving homes through a network of volunteer foster homes (with foster-to-adopt as an option). Through this personalised approach we have been re-homing animals for over 30 years.

Please peruse the information available on this website to learn more about us and our process, our dogs or how you can help us help the animals! For more information on how you can help contribute click here, use the navigation bar above, or simply browse our blog below.

Thank you for your interest in Dogwood Sporting Dog Rescue: Changing Lives One Dog At A Time

Time Marches On

…and it does, the inevitable happens – change.

Here at Dogwood we are also making changes as well as acquiring more dogs for adoption and finding more forever homes.

We are pleased to report that most of the labs from Utah are in forever homes with the exception of Baloo who has special needs.

Beautiful Dana has found a wonderful forever home.

We are still looking for homes for our mini-pins Dee Dee and Merry.

We hope that you will continue to visit this site as we have so much to share with you.

To all of you who have adopted a rescue dog, a great big thank you!

Before signing off, we would like you to know that we are not a shelter and are always looking for foster parents for our canine friends, which is extremely rewarding work. Fosters are crucial to the work we do because the more people we have who are willing to foster, the more dogs we can rescue.

An interesting editorial from examiner.com

Our director Lichen recently read this opinion editorial on how societal beliefs that animals are disposable, and people’s tendency to rehome, even put down their family dog when things become overwhelming or challenging often leads to more dogs dying needlessly.

We agree that it is important to explore all options for rehabilitating a physically or behaviourally challenged pet before giving up on them. Animals are a lifelong commitment and they rely on their families to take care of them and do the best they can to ensure their dog leads a long, healthy and happy life. If only all dog owners were as loyal as their canine companions.

A Dozen Dogs for Dogwood! Maybe one is right for you?

Dogwood welcomed 12 new dogs this week from Utah, USA where they were rescued from certain euthanasia in a shelter. Though they are all currently in foster care, each of these lovely dogs are still looking for their forever homes, along with our existing fosters.

We currently have more than 30 dogs in our care who are in need of adoptive homes. These are great dogs who were unlucky in a previous life, and ended up in a shelter. To take a look at our current list of dogs seeking happy homes please check our petfinder site here

Can You Help Dania

Dania – lab X

urgently needs home

Dania is in urgent need of a new foster home. Her current foster parent can no longer keep her and Dania urgently needs a new place to await her forever home.

She is a larger sized dog at approx 80 lbs. She is gentle and sweet and reportedly has a calm and slightly goofy demeanor. Her current foster parent believes she would be great for pet therapy or taking to work as she is very easygoing. She will do best in an environment where someone is often home during the day or can bring her out with them to work etc.

She is very short haired, easy to groom, easy to dry when wet and less shedding than most.

Dania is good with other dogs and dog savvy kids. She does have a slight deformity in one leg (it is shorter than the others and crooked) adding to her charm.

She does have a slight prey drive so anyone who may consider themselves frail may have trouble with correcting such a big dog. A running squirrel or bird will get her attention, so you should be confident in your ability to correct her on the leash.

Dania came to our rescue as a stray and has been tested for triggers and signs of reaction to all types of strangers and trauma (dinner parties, big men, men in hats/beards, kids etc) and she has not reacted negatively. As a result of her time as a stray she does scarf her food down quite quickly, she gets fed slowly to help resolve this issue

Please read and share the link to this page or to her petfinder profile here and let us know if you can help. Please email or share this message if you can, as we are in urgent need to find a new loving place for Dania.

Please contact us at dogwoodrescue@shaw.ca if you can help.
